Chapter
History
Chapter
55 was originally organized in 1959. Dedicated to the promotion of aviation
education and recreation, the Chapter supports a variety of programs
and activities to that end. With over 110 active members, the Chapter
is a hub of sport aviation activity for the greater Lansing area. A
very diverse membership insures that any aviation enthusiast will find
others within the Chapter with similar interests.
The
Chapter Hangar, located at the Mason Jewett Field Airport, was constructed
in 1985. The facility provides hangar space for members' aircraft, a
meeting room and a dedicated workshop for member's aircraft building
or restoration projects.
The
original purpose for the Experimental Aircraft Association was to support
the homebuilt aircraft movement. This objective is very much alive at
Chapter 55 with many homebuilt aircraft projects under construction
or completed by Chapter members (Glasair III, Glasair IIS FT, GlaStar,
RV-6's, RV-8's, Pietenpol Sky Scout, Kitfox, Christavia, Phantom, KIS
and Hummelbird. . .) to name a few.
While
not all chapter members are pilots or homebuilders, they all have one
thing in common, the love of things that fly. If any of this sounds
interesting or if you are just "plane crazy" come on out to
a Chapter 55 meeting and join the fun!
Meetings
are held on the second Saturday of each month at the chapter hangar
at the Mason-Jewett Airport in Mason, MI. Breakfast begins serving at
8:00 am with the meeting and program starting at 9:30 am.
